The dictionary defines love as an abstract concept referring to deep feelings of tenderly caring for another person. Love can be regarded as the highest and most rewarding gift that anyone can give or be given. To feel this type of love for someone is to care unconditionally, without certain preset conditions or requirements. It is demonstrated by honoring that individual and letting him or her know that he or she is extremely valued for who he or she is, rather than trying to change that person to suit one’s own needs.

Love is a creative and dynamic exchange between two people. It is not a situation wherein one person dominates or controls the other. Notice that we did not say that love is always an equal exchange. Showing love to someone may not always be reciprocated at the same level of feeling or commitment. So, love can be beautiful and painful at the same time. Relationships, whether with a spouse, a parent or sibling, or a friend, are always a give-and-take exchange. Each person has to give up something in order to gain from the other. That is what love is all about!
